This study examines the evolution and significance of public spaces in port complexes as dynamic nodes of urban life where economic activity, cultural exchange, and environmental quality converge. Port complexes, traditionally viewed exclusively as centers of industrial logistics, are increasingly being redefined as catalysts for urban revitalization and public engagement. This article outlines a conceptual framework that combines urban planning, landscape architecture, and social policy to explore how public spaces in port areas can improve the quality of life for residents and create an attractive environment for visitors. Drawing on interdisciplinary approaches and recent global research, the analysis evaluates case studies from Europe, Asia and North America that demonstrate that well-designed public spaces in port complexes contribute to sustainable urban development by promoting social inclusion, economic diversification and environmental sustainability. In addition, the study identifies challenges and opportunities specific to post-industrial waterfronts, emphasizing adaptive reuse, mixed-use development, and public participation in planning processes. The study findings suggest that targeted interventions in port areas can transform neglected spaces into vibrant community centers. This study not only summarizes international experience, but also critically analyzes the contextual factors that influence urban waterfronts in Ukraine, including socio-economic transformations and regional planning practices. As a result, the article offers strategic recommendations for urban planners and policy makers, advocating for integrated design approaches that balance heritage preservation with innovative spatial programming to realize the full potential of port complexes as multifunctional public spaces.
