Integration of modern embankments into the urban environment

Abstract

The article is devoted to the integration of modern embankments into the historically established urban environment. Embankments are coastal areas that have high recreational potential with excellent conditions for recreation and walking. Therefore, embankments occupy an important place in the life of cities, and their competent organization and design improves the quality of life of citizens, increases the economic potential of the city - increases its chances in the struggle for competitiveness.

Historically, the use of embankments in the public life of the city has not received due attention. The development of cities was justified by the presence of transport routes and industrial potential, because of which the purpose of coastal areas considered as cargo ports, and industrial enterprises and railway lines built closer to water bodies than residential buildings. As a result, numerous residential areas cut off from water. For example, in Odesa, the industrial zones of the city located along the coast occupy about 10 km or 33% of the total length of the coastline of the Odesa coast, blocking free access for the population of residential areas to the shore of the Black Sea Gulf. At the same time, there are a huge number of examples around the world where the embankment is the face of the city, along which palaces and gardens built, which today are monuments of urban planning.

Analysis of the relationship between water bodies and adjacent coastal areas allows us to identify two main problems in the organization and formation of urban landscapes of coastal zones: the functional development of embankments and the integration of modern embankments into a dense urban environment.

When renovating and modernizing urban landscapes of coastal zones, an integral task should be a programmatic integrated conceptual approach, which includes the main tasks: spatial and functional correction of the urban environment in the embankment zone; environmental rehabilitation of coastal zones; ergonomics and aesthetic harmonization of the architectural and landscape environment.
